The Mokil

Conrad Bentzen
1950
58 minutes

A portrayal of the Micronesian Mokil, aiming to catch the essence of life on the atolls.

The people on the island of Mokil are fairly portrayed in their daily business, both at work and play: the annual life cycle, the rules of child rearing, the distribution of work according to sex, and the general mood in the relations between people on the island. The film particularly supplies a wealth of material concerning the economy. These episodes clarify the atoll environment and the islanders adaption to it. The film is organized around the problem of a growing population in a finite ecology. A growing population and the growing need for cash makes for increasing pressure on scant resources.
